Natural Recipes
A couple recipes I am finding to save us money.
I like Zoot (at our Walmart). I use 1/3 bar, it is bigger than the Fels-Naptha bar which I found at Kroger. I like the smell of it.
This I took from the Duggar family page.
Homemade Liquid Laundry Soap- Front or top load machine- best value
4 Cups - hot tap water
1 Fels-Naptha soap bar
1 Cup - Arm & Hammer Super Washing Soda*
½ Cup Borax
- Grate bar of soap and add to saucepan with water. Stir continually over medium-low heat until soap dissolves and is melted.
-Fill a 5 gallon bucket half full of hot tap water. Add melted soap, washing soda and Borax. Stir well until all powder is dissolved. Fill bucket to top with more hot water. Stir, cover and let sit overnight to thicken.
-Stir and fill a used, clean, laundry soap dispenser half full with soap and then fill rest of way with water. Shake before each use. (will gel)
-Optional: You can add 10-15 drops of essential oil per 2 gallons. Add once soap has cooled. Ideas: lavender, rosemary, tea tree oil.
-Yield: Liquid soap recipe makes 10 gallons.
-Top Load Machine- 5/8 Cup per load (Approx. 180 loads)
-Front Load Machines- ¼ Cup per load (Approx. 640 loads)
*Arm & Hammer "Super Washing Soda" - in some stores or may be purchased online here (at Meijer.com). Baking Soda will not work, nor will Arm & Hammer Detergent - It must be sodium carbonate!!

I put vinegar in a Downey ball and it works great for softening and odors. This is a must for my husband's work shirts.
Also a couple hints for a dryer softener.
Cut dryer sheets in half.
Take a bottle of softener, dilute with two parts water. Cut a couple sponges in half. Dip one in diluted fabric softener. Squeeze out and throw in dryer.

I don't know if you have tried those Color Catcher sheets. I saw a cool tip on a comment on a website. She by accident found out that you can use cheap dried baby wipes and throw them in the wash. They work just as well for a fraction of the cost. I haven't had a chance to try it yet.

Just started using a homemade dishwasher soap. It seems to work pretty well so far.
1 c. washing soda
1 c. borax
1 c. salt
4 packages of Koolaid lemonade unsweetened packages. (don't use a color, it might dye things) You need the citric acid in it to keep dishes from being cloudy. If you have pure citric acid you can use a comparable amount of this.
NOTE: This worked well for a few weeks. Then the dishes seemed to quite getting as clean and had a film on them. I tried more vinegar, kool aid. No avail. We went back to soap. I left on here to see if someone else wants to try and maybe tweak to work. Let me know if you have found something that has worked for you... also if you have hard or soft water.
